Progression in Prayer & Liturgy
Impact
As a Catholic school, we intend to embed our mission and Pupil Profile virtues across the school through the teaching of the RE curriculum. We recognise that every child is an individual and is special, unique and made in God’s own image and likeness. We want the children in our school to develop a deeper understanding of the Catholic faith, and their morals and values but to also demonstrate a deep respect towards other races and religions. We want RE to underpin the curriculum in our school and explicit cross-curricular links will be made where appropriate. Through the teaching of RE, we want to child to learn about God’s love for them, learn about Catholic traditions and beliefs, and to recognise their ‘call to holiness’ by actively living our school mission statement of ‘Growing in the gifts that God has given us.’ I
Implementation
At our school, we follow the Learning And Growing scheme of work which is in line with guidance from the Birmingham Diocese. This programme is followed from Nursery to Year 6 and encourages the children to become learned and wise in their knowledge and understanding of Religious Education. The programme is based around the three key elements of the liturgical year, the sacraments and living as Christians. The curriculum hours for RE are non-negotiable and 10% of the teaching week is dedicated to the subject. Each year group will study a number of units throughout the year and will build upon previous knowledge and experience.
The programme provides:
- Opportunities for prayer and reflection;
- An opportunity to develop their knowledge of religious vocabulary (places in Biblical history, scripture, symbols, rituals, and objects);
- Teaching of the life and work of key figures in the History of God including Old Testament and New Testament figures, as well as the saints;
- A range of teaching, activities and individual work.
From receiving the above provision, the children will become eloquent and truthful in the way they speak about their beliefs and knowledge of RE.
The RE curriculum will also provide the children with opportunities to study other world religions. Guest speakers from Catholic organisations and charities will also enhance the children’s learning, encouraging them to become curious and active citizens of their local and wider community.
The children will be regularly assessed in RE using age related expectations and the assessment focus provided by the diocese. Moderation and monitoring by SLT and alongside teachers of RE will ensure that expectations remain consistent and high across all year groups.
Impact
The pupils at our school enjoy and engage in RE lessons. Because they have experienced a wide range of challenge and learning in their lessons, they are eloquent in their responses and work. The children develop a deep appreciation of their faith, and areattentive to their vocation that God has given them.
Children of all abilities and backgrounds achieve and progress in their RE lessons because teachers are thoughtful in their planning sequence. Through assessment, all children achieve the best they can and are aware of the next steps in their learning.
The children grow to know and love God, are grateful for the gifts that God has given them and strive to achieve their God-given vocation.
The children continue to develop their understanding of the Pupil Profile virtues year on year and are able to relate them to their own lives. They live their faith in an active way, always striving to make the world a better place for all.
The children celebrate difference and will have a good knowledge of the different beliefs held by others.
The RE work set for the children reflects and celebrates the Catholic faith and the children reflect deeply and thoughtfully on their knowledge, understanding and their own beliefs.
