Relationship & Health Education Policy
Intent
The children and St Joseph and St Theresa school will understand that RHE is an important and crucial part of preparing them to adult, independent life. They will understand the importance of healthy friendships and relationships and will be able to link it to the roots of the teachings of the Catholic Church. The children will be able develop their understanding of RHE by understanding the importance of family life, stable and loving relationships and respect for others, love and care. Through the RHE programme, the children will embrace “the challenges of creating a happy and successful adult life” by giving pupils knowledge “that will enable them to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships” (DFE Statutory Guidance).
Implementation
RSE is taught through the Life to the Full scheme of work which is resourced by Ten Ten Resources. It fulfils and embraces the new statutory curriculum.
Teachers will receive training sessions on how to deliver this programme and will be regularly updated with new information or requirements. Parents will also be notified of their child’s work surrounding RSE and will be kept up to date through parent information and newsletters.
Life to the Full is taught over 3 terms, using a 2 year cycle. This means that the learning is spread over two years and there is very little repetition of content year on year. The programme is timetabled into the curriculum with space for extended learning and consolidation where necessary.
The programme is as follows:
Year 1, 3 and 5 undertake Module 2: Created to Love Others
Year 2, 4 and 6 undertake Module 1: Created and Loved by God
All years undertake Module 3: Created to Live in the community.
The programme uses videos, stories, worship music and prayer in all lessons and is appropriately differentiated for each year group through vocabulary, content and activity.
Impact
After completing their modules, the children will actively demonstrate confidenceand awareness of their relationships with families and others in their life. They will know that they are made in the image and likeness of God and will develop and understanding of the importance of valuing themselves. They will build on this knowledge to understand that they are created out of love, and must love others in return, using the pupil profile virtues of being loving and compassionate.
They will confidently use strategies for developing healthy relationships and keeping themselves safe.
The children will gather a good understanding of how human beings are called to love others in the wider community and work for the Common Good that is taught to them through the word of God.
